Roles and Responsibilities of the Ministry

The B.C. Ministry of Education is responsible for Kindergarten to Grade 12 (K-12) education in the province. It also oversees programs and services in the areas of literacy, early learning and public libraries.

The ministry’s role includes: providing funding, setting standards, developing legislation and policy, measuring performance and reporting results.

Public education services are delivered locally by boards of education and public schools. B.C. also has many independent schools, operated by independent school authorities, and band-run schools for First Nations students. For more details, see the Schools section of this website.

Literacy services are delivered in partnership with communities, public libraries, boards of education and schools.

Early learning services are delivered in collaboration with other ministries, including Children and Family Development and Health, and with a range of community-based agencies and organizations.
