Healthy Eating/Physical Activity

British Columbians are among the healthiest people anywhere – but most of us still have room for improvements in our lifestyles. As parents, we also have great opportunities to help our children learn healthy habits that will last, and benefit them, for a lifetime.

Want to make sure your child is getting all the nutrition she or he needs? Want some new ideas for activities you can do together as a family? If so, the Healthy Living for Families guide is a good place to start. The information is tailored to the needs of families with children in Grades K-3, 4-78-9 and 10-12.  Each guide also has links at the back to connect you with more resources.

Here are some examples of programs and resources being used in B.C. schools today:

The School Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program brings fresh produce to the classroom.

B.C. has guidelines for food and beverage sales in schools. They support the province’s goal to eliminate junk foods from public schools.

Daily Physical Activity program is available to complement existing physical education and health instruction for students in Grades K-12.

A Kindergarten to Grade 10 grade-by-grade set of healthy eating and physical activity classroom-based lesson plans are available. Grade 8Grade 9 and Grade 10 have been distributed to public and independent schools across the province. French translated versions will be available in Spring 2008. Kindergarten to Grade 7 will be available Fall 2008.
