Governance Support

The governance of small, rural and remote school districts is both challenging and rewarding. Declining enrolments, fewer economies of scale and proportionately higher operating costs provide fiscal challenges.

Yet small districts offer trustees the opportunity to work more closely with and to better understand the needs of the schools they govern. This can result in better policy-making and creative problem-solving.

There are several different funding supplements available to districts to account for unique geographic factors.

The Task Force on Rural Education recommended the use of shared services among school districts, regions, and small communities to find cost savings. Initiatives to share services between two or more school boards may involve activities that are operational.

The Rural Education Network is an electronic learning community composed of educators, trustees, parents and community members who have an interest in the future of British Columbia’s rural schools. Its aim is to provide a forum for ongoing dialogue, inquiry and learning for rural educators and those who support their efforts.

There are several organizations that provide advice and assistance to Boards on legal, governance and policy issues. Check out:

• Ministry of Education (Manual of School Law)
• British Columbia School Trustees Association
• Canadian School Boards Association
• National School Boards Association
