Understanding Virtual School

The Virtual School does not have a building or location.  It is an alliance of public distributed learning (DL) schools.  Forty-seven school districts with DL schools have agreed to be part of this alliance.  Each DL school is managed and run by the school district in which it is located.

The alliance enables coordination and efficiencies for services such as websites, tutoring, assessment, course development, registration, access to courses and other services.  The alliance will also be able to coordinate services like training for teachers who work in distributed learning.  Over time, there will be more educational services for students, teachers and parents.  These resources will be shared by all distributed learning schools.

The Virtual School Society (VSS) is providing financial support and guidance to support the emergence of the Virtual School.  The VSS is an independent, non-profit entity founded in 2006.  Its purpose it to enhance the use of distributed learning in British Columbia.
