What is Distributed Learning?

Distributed Learning (DL) is a choice for BC students who need or want to learn at a distance from a school.

DL students can start school throughout the calendar year.  They have access to learning opportunities outside conventional school timetables.  DL students may be working adults with other responsibilities, or travelling.  Distributed learning also provides courses for students who cannot access the courses they need in their school.

Distributed learning offers a full range of courses from Kindergarten to Grade 12.  It utilizes teaching practices to engage students and provide flexibility to learn at the student's pace.

There are many distributed learning schools in BC. They have all signed an agreement with the Ministry of Education that ensures their commitment to quality. Any school-aged or non-graduated adult, who is a resident of BC or temporarily out of the province, can take distributed learning courses. If you’d like to know more about the courses offered in BC, check out the Course Finder.

Want to find out more about what services you should be receiving as part of distributed learning? See the BC Distributed Learning Standards, which will help you understand what’s involved. If you’re still curious, this website has a Suitability Quiz that will help you determine if you’re the type of student who’s suited to distributed learning courses.
